বিস্তৃতি (Distribution)
বাংলাদেশ, ভারত (পশ্চিমবঙ্গ ও উডিষ্যা (Odisha) (পূর্বে উড়িষ্যার) এবং ইন্দোনেশিয়া (Talwar and Jhingran, 1991)।
Fishbase (2014) অনুসারে উষ্ণ জলের সামুদ্রিক, উপকূলীয় ও স্বাদুপানির এই মাছ পাওয়া যায় বাংলাদেশ, ব্রুনাই (Brunei), ভারত, ইন্দোনেশিয়া, মালয়েশিয়া, থাইল্যান্ড ও ভিয়েতনামে যার বিস্তৃতি 24°N – 3°S, 81°E – 114°E ।

সংরক্ষণ অবস্থা (Conservation status)
বাংলাদেশে এই প্রজাতিটি হুমকিগ্রস্ত তালিকার অন্তর্ভুক্ত নয় (IUCN Bangladesh, 2000)।
Chaudhry (2010) অনুসারে আইইউসিএন এর হুমকিগ্রস্ত প্রজাতির লাল তালিকায় (The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species) এদের অবস্থান Least Concern অর্থাৎ এই মাছ বিস্তৃত এলাকায় প্রচুর পরিমাণে পাওয়া যায়।

দৈহিক গঠন (Morphology)
লম্বা দেহ পার্শ্বীয়ভাবে চ্যাপ্টা। উদরের নিচে ১১+৬/৭টি (সাধারণত ৭টি) ত্রিকোণাকার স্কিউট (scute) থাকে এবং ফুলকা-দণ্ডের (gillraker) নিচের অংশে ১৯-২১টি কাঁটা থাকে (Talwar and Jhingran, 1991)। পায়ুপাখনা শেষ দুটি পাখনা-রশ্মি একত্রে আলাদা একটি ক্ষুদ্রাকার পাখনা গঠন করে।
পার্শ্বরেখায় ৪০-৪৩টি আঁইশ উপস্থিত (Rahman, 1989 and 2005)। পুচ্ছপাখনা দ্বিখণ্ডিত এবং উপরের খণ্ডের চেয়ে নিচের খণ্ড সামান্য লম্বা।
বাদামী বর্ণের দেহের মাঝ বরাবর একটা সরু রেখা লম্বালম্বিভাবে বিস্তৃত। পুচ্ছ পাখনার প্রান্ত হালকা বর্ণের যার মধ্যে হালকা কাল দাগ দেখতে পাওয়া যায়।

সর্বোচ্চ দৈর্ঘ্য (Maximum length)
Bhuiyan (1964) অনুসারে সর্বোচ্চ মোট দৈর্ঘ্য ৩ সেমি এবং Rahman (1989 and 2005) অনুসারে ৩.৫ সেমি। অন্যদিকে Talwar and Jhingran (1991) অনুসারে আদর্শ দৈর্ঘ্য ৪ সেমি এবং Shafi and Quddus (2001) অনুসারে ৬ সেমি।

আবাস্থল (Habitat)
সাধারণত নদী এবং মোহনাঞ্চলে পাওয়া যায় (Talwar and Jhingran, 1991)। বাংলাদেশের প্রায় সব নদীতেই এদের আধিক্য লক্ষ করার যায় (Rahman, 1989 and 2005)। নদী ছাড়াও পুকুর, জলা এবং ছোট ঝর্ণাতে এদের দেখা মেলে (Bhuiyan, 1964)। বাংলাদেশের নাটোরের চলন বিল (Galib et al., 2009) ও হালতি বিলে (Imteazzaman and Galib, 2013) এদের উপস্থিতি রয়েছে।

মৎস্য তথ্য (Fishery info)
ভারতের মৎস্য খাতে এর গুরুত্ব খুব কম (Talwar and Jhingran, 1991)। সতেজ ও শুঁটকি মাছ হিসেবে এটি বাংলাদেশে খুব জনপ্রিয় খাবারের মাছ। Bhuiyan (1964) অনুসারে মৎস্য খাতে এর কোন গুরুত্ব নেই তবে মাছটির কিছু ঔষধিগুণ আছে এবং অনেকে একে মাছ ধরার টোপ হিসেবে ব্যবহার করে থাকে।
