গ্রিক শব্দ aspis, -idos অর্থ ঢাল (shield) এবং গ্রিক শব্দ pareia অর্থ গাল (cheek) থেকে Aspidoparia শব্দটি এসেছে Fishbase (2015)।

ভৌগলিক বিস্তৃতি (Geographical Distribution)
বাংলাদেশ, ভারত (আসাম, উত্তরাঞ্চল, উত্তর প্রদেশ) ও নেপাল (Chaudhry 2010)। এই মাছ আফগানিস্তান থেকেও নথিভুক্ত করা হয়েছে Fishbase (2015), Talwar, P.K and A.G. Jhingran (1991)।
সংরক্ষণ অবস্থা (Conservation status)
এই মাছ খাবারের মাছ হিসেবে এমনকি বাহারি মাছ হিসেবে মাত্রাতিরিক্ত আহরণ করার ফলে বিস্তীর্ণ অঞ্চলব্যাপী আশংকাজনকভাবে হুমকির মুখে পড়েছে। স্থানীয়ভাবেও এই প্রজাতির সংখ্যা দিন দিন হ্রাস পাচ্ছে। এই প্রজাতির বৈশ্বিক সংরক্ষণ অবস্থা Least Concern (LC) ver 3.1 (Chaudhry 2010)। বাংলাদেশে এই প্রজাতি হুমকিগ্রস্থ প্রজাতির তালিকার অন্তর্ভূক্ত নয় (IUCN Bangladesh, 2000)।
বাহ্যিক দৈহিক গঠন (External Morphology)
লম্বা দেহ পার্শ্বীয়ভাবে চাপা। মুখ ছোট, নিম্নমুখী ও নিচের ঠোট বিহীন। স্পর্শী অনুপস্থিত। তুণ্ড ভোতা। নিচের চোয়াল অর্ধচন্দ্রাকার অস্থিময় ও ধারালো প্রান্ত বিশিষ্ট। পার্শ্বরেখা বেশ বাঁকানো এবং পুচ্ছদণ্ডের অর্ধাংশ পর্যন্ত বিস্তৃত।
পৃষ্ঠপাখনা পৃষ্ঠদেশে তুণ্ড ও পুচ্ছপাখনার গোঁড়ার মধ্যবর্তী স্থানে অবস্থিত। শ্রোণীপাখনা পৃষ্ঠপাখনা বরাবর বিপরীত পাশে অঙ্কীয়দেশে অবস্থিত। বক্ষপাখনা দৈর্ঘ্যে মাথার দৈর্ঘ্যের সমান তবে তার শ্রোণীপাখনা অতিক্রম করে না।
এর আঁইশ পর্ণমোচী অর্থাৎ প্রতিবছর এ মাছের শরীরের আঁইশ ঝড়ে যায় ও নতুন আঁইশ তৈরি হয়। Talwar and Jhingran (1991) অনুসারে পার্শ্বরেখা বরাবর ৫২-৬০টি আঁইশ উপস্থিত। অন্যদিকে Rahman and Ruma (2007) অনুসারে পার্শ্বরেখায় ৪৫-৫৯টি আঁইশ বিদ্যমান।

সর্বোচ্চ দৈর্ঘ্য (Maximum length)
Rahman (1989) অনুসারে এ মাছের সংগৃহীত বৃহত্তম নমুনার মোট দৈর্ঘ্য ৯৭ মিলিমিটার। অন্যদিকে Talwar, P.K and A.G. Jhingran (1991) অনুসারে এ মাছের সর্বোচ্চ দৈর্ঘ্য ১৫০ মিলিমিটার বা ১৫ সেন্টিমিটার পর্যন্ত হয়ে থাকে।
আবাস্থল ও বাস্তুতাত্ত্বিক ভূমিকা (Habitat and Ecological Role)
স্বাদুপানির এই মাছ সমতল ও পাহাড়ি এলাকার পুকুর ও ঝর্ণার মত ছোট ছোট প্রবহমান জলপ্রবাহে বাস করে (Menon, 1999)। সাধারণত ০ থেকে ১৭৬৯ মিটার উচ্চতায় পাওয়া যায় (Chaudhry 2010)।
খাদ্য এবং খাদ্যাভ্যাস (Food and feeding habit)
এই মাছ জলাশয়ের তলদেশ ও মধ্যস্তরের খাবার গ্রহণ করে থাকে। অর্থাৎ জলাশয়ের এসব স্তরের খাদ্য গ্রহণকারী অন্যান্য প্রজাতির মতই এরা ক্ষুদ্র উদ্ভিদ কণা, প্রাণী-কণা, আবর্জনা, জলজ আগাছার অবশিষ্টাংশ, জৈবপদার্থ সমৃদ্ধ কাদা, শেওলা ইত্যাদি গ্রহণ করে (Dutta et. al, 2012) ।
প্রজনন (Breeding)
এ প্রজাতির মাছ সাধারণত বর্ষাকালে অগভীর জলাশয়ে প্রজননে অংশগ্রহণ করে থাকে। মে থেকে আগস্ট এবং ডিসেম্বর থেকে জানুয়ারি মাসসমূহে ডিম-ধারী পরিপক্ব স্ত্রী মাছ পাওয়া যায় এবং জুন থেকে সেপ্টেম্বর মাসে এদের পোনার উপস্থিতি লক্ষ্য করা যায় Bhuiyan (2010)
মৎস্য গুরুত্ব (Fishery importance)
এ মাছ অত্যন্ত সুস্বাদু ও উচ্চ খাদ্যমান সমৃদ্ধ হওয়ায় নির্বিচারে আহরণ করা হয় (Fishbase 2015)। বাংলাদেশে একক প্রজাতি হিসেবে এই মাছের উৎপাদন তথ্য পাওয়া যায়না। তবে ভারতের অরুণাচল প্রদেশে এ মাছের আহরণ হার ৩.৮% (Tamang et al 2007)
বাহারি মাছ হিসাবে এর অর্থনৈতিক গুরুত্ব আছে।
